verify ownership of items
guarantee the accuracy of listings
handle payments between buyers and sellers
guarantee that sellers are legitimate
inspect or certify items

Buyers must take reasonable steps to verify sellers and listings before proceeding with any transaction.

Buyer Responsibilities

Verify the Seller

Confirm the seller’s identity and contact details where possible.

If the seller claims to represent a business or dealership, check:

business name
ABN registration
website presence
contact information

Inspect the Item

Whenever possible, inspect the item in person before making payment.

If you cannot inspect the item personally, consider using:

an independent inspector
a mechanic
a trusted third party

Check Ownership

For vehicles, machinery or equipment, you should confirm that the seller legally owns the item.

You may wish to conduct a Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) search to check if the item:

has finance owing
is reported stolen
has a security interest

Payment Safety

To reduce the risk of fraud:

avoid sending deposits before verifying the item and seller
avoid wire transfers to unknown individuals
avoid unusual payment methods requested by sellers
avoid sending payment to overseas bank accounts unless verified
keep records of all communications and payments

If a deal appears suspicious or too good to be true, proceed with caution.

Fake Listings

Images are copied from other websites to create fake listings.

Payment Redirection

A scammer attempts to redirect payment to a different account.

The seller pressures buyers to pay quickly before the item is sold.

Overseas Seller Scams

The seller claims the item is located overseas and asks for shipping payments.
